I am trying to mount a set of 255-50-17s on 17 by 9 wheels from a 95 Impala SS. They fit fine and clear everything but I'm having trouble finding the right lug nuts for the drivers side with the left hand thread studs. I found the RH thread versions, 1/2" 20 size with a 60 degree wide conical seat, see pic. Does anyone know if a left hand thread version is available, if so point me in the right direction - thanks.

 

I'm not aware of ANY GM with L/H threads on the lug nuts!

Is there a L stamped on the end of the stud??

 

You may have to change all the lug studs to RH thread - you just pound out the old ones with a BFH and then use a lug nut to pull the new ones into the holes.
Any auto parts store should have them.

i had a 62 dynamic 88 that had left threads on one side and right on the other.

 

Not sure when it started but most fullsize GM cars had LH thread lugs on the drivers side up through 1963. My 63 Buick Riviera had them and so does the Starfire. The wheel bearing retaner nut on the drivers side is also LH thread. I don't want to remove the lugs if I can find the right nuts.

Wouldn't look the same as your pics, but those SS wheels have caps/covers, right ? ...and these would be available almost anywhere....

 

Uh, don't you mean "the LEFT nuts"??! I was not sure when they stopped doing this, but my '40 ninety series has lefties on it. Are these wheels going onto the '63 Starfire in your signature? I have the 17" Impala wheels on my '92 Custom Cruiser with 1970 "Rocket" badges I had created on an autocad program. A local trophy shop engraved them for me, and then mated them to some 0.90 T3 aluminum backing, then Imron cleared. I've been happy with them for just shy of ten years now. I hope that you are too.

 

I think Dodge was the last hold-out on the left hand threaded studs and nuts and they stopped using them in the early 70's. A 95 Impala will have only right hand thread studs and nuts.

Edit: Your issue is not left or right hand thread, but the fact that you are trying the thread ½"x 20 nuts onto 12mm x 1.5 studs.

 

He's using a '95 Impala wheel on original left hand threaded studs on his original '63 Starfire which came equipped with left hand threaded studs originally...as per factory...

 

Thanks, these are the same as the stock ones on the car. They will work but they don't have the wider conical seat that the mags are designed for and tend to bite into the aluminum. If worst comes to worst I'll use them but I would prefer the other style.

 

Yes, I want to put them on my 63. I was very surprised that they fit as well as they do and have no clearance issues. I was thinking about the same custom badge idea, you wouldn't have a spare set lying around would you?

I just wanted to follow up with the final decision on this. I decided I did not want to replace all the wheel lugs so I did not use the big alloy wheels. I wound up with a set of 15" cop wheels from a 95 Caprice with 235-70-15 BFG Radial T/A's and a set of 1960 Buick wheel covers. I like the look, it reminds me of the 70s.
