Thumbs up 17" superstock 2 wheels

I just picked up a set of these om a black friday deal. Staggered 17 x 8 and 17 x 9.

I have to say that I am quite impressed. They look way better in person than in the crappy photos online at Year One.

Quality and paint look awesome. These will be going on my Rallye 350 I am restoring. I will paint at least the center area yellow.

Pat

They snap in. The center caps do seem a little cheap, they are plastic. They look fine when installed though.

I should also mention the wheels seem pretty heavy, I have not weighed one yet....Edit. 25.6 pounds for both size wheels, which is not bad at all for a cast wheel this size. My daily driver has 18" wheels which weigh 24 pounds and are only 8" wide.

Any idea what a stock wheel weighs?

Pat

Great pics of those. A lot better than what was on the web.
Might have to get me a set of those. Been looking at them for a while.

Wow, those mimic the look of the factory SS-IIs / -IIIs much better than the 17" SS-Is I've seen. While I like the style of the SS-Is better than the -IIs / -IIIs, the 17" versions look more obviously non-factory than these 17" SS-IIs.

Wow! Those are very nice!!! Can't wait to see 'em on your Rallye 350. Yours look much nicer than the other brand I've seen. They were MHT "saber" wheels,I didn't really care for them.

Amen. I've seen the pictures at Year One and was never interested. They look GREAT in your pictures. Very nice rendition. Thanks for being our guinea pig!

I am showing 23.6# for both 15” snap on or bolt on stripped with no jewelry. Maybe the additional weight is “dressed”

The Year One version is much more convincing than the Sabre version. Although I tend to lean towards factory parts, these wheels are very sharp.

I've always considered that the wheel pictured above would look good on the later cars that had the raised center with snap on cap, along with the stepped rim. Especially the 80s versions. The ones fasteddy posted in the first post look great on the 60s/70s bolt on cap with trim ring cars. That's simply my opinion. It just matches up better with the era. They both look good in my opinion and I'd roll with either wheel.

The one above reminds me of that one 17" billet "prototype" 2 piece set that was made years ago (see pic below) that are assembled now to the desired back spacing and awaiting use on an 87 442 resto-mod. It's pretty cool as it was made to accept the factory Olds center snap cap. Gary Willard made them and they were oh so good. I almost pulled the trigger to buy them, but backed down at the last minute because of 1) cost consideration was a bit much, but worth it, and 2) I really didn't have any plans to use them on anything. But they were cool. It's nice to have choices.

I’m going to venture to say that you could fit any sized brakes you’d like with 17” wheels.

Fitting brakes inside the hoops is one thing, also have to consider clearance between the inside of the wheel spokes and face of the caliper. More so up front, with bulkier calipers. I had 17" wheels that of course fit with factory brakes, but when I put C5 Corvette brakes on, the 17's no longer worked.

Those look awesome!!!!! If they had been available back in '12 they'd be on my '68!!! But I spent enough for the '69 H/O style 15" wheels & they're staying put for now!

I’ve been contemplating these wheels for a while now, but as previously mentioned: the photos on the Year One website are awful.
If you don’t mind me asking: what kind of sale did you get during the Black Friday sale (curious to how much money I left on the table) and what size tires are you using?

What size tires did you go with for that staggered rim set? I'm guessing 245-45-17 and 275-40-17? These are all the same height as the 245-60-14s I'm running now and are what I'm considering going with.

$1,131.20 shipped. I actually ended up getting them for free. Discount Tire scratched all four mounting the tires and paid me back for, and let me keep them. The scratches are minor, but in the clear of the machined lips. I have not decided what I am going to do yet... I might paint them yellow

Hey Eddy, If you paint them let us know how it goes, please. I really like those wheels, at least by the pics, but I would want the centers painted to match my car (blue). Too bad your's got scratched but not bad ending up with free wheels!!...Thanks Greg.

I will post up once I test a couple wheels with some yellow plastidip. I was going to try one with just the center painted and one all yellow.

Do you find that these rub on the suspension arms, I'm running 245x45x18's on the front and mine scrub on the inside and I'm looking whether spacers will work and clear the front fender?

To those interested. I too had purchased those same Year One SSII wheels (staggered width front and back) in September 2019 after wanting more breaking power than a basic rear disc conversion was going to provide. Doing that meant larger wheels.

Just a heads up these are brushed/polished aluminum to look like chrome, but they also to have a chromed version. But they look great, so good in fact that I'm torn on painting them the body color (Viking Blue)...I will say that I do somewhat regret not going with 8" all around so I can run a common spare and rotate tires.

Tires - Nittos all around Front: 255/50R17, Rear: 275/50R17. I wanted side wall and some bulge to give it as close to a classic look as possible. Mine look very similar to the photos above.
Brakes - Front: Baer Brakes Track 4 front brake kit (A body, 13" rotors). Rear: Baer IronSport rear brake package. (Ironsports were cheaper than the Track4s).

Not ones that will help give much perspective unfortunately. I didn't think to take photos after I put the wheels and tires on. The car is packed in the garage at the moment but here's a photo I just took of the rear wheel and tire.

Thanks or that, just trying to decide myself if that's the route I want to take. They look really nice close up in all the pictures on here, but like you said hard to get perspective both on a rolling chassis or a close up. Now if someone would produce a nice raised white letter tire in those tire sizes that would be perfect!

Wheels look great. I'm seriously considering doing the same staggered set with the Baer track 4's. A little concerned about fitment on the front of my 68.
Thanks for the great info
