How to remove a Custom Cruiserr tailgate

I need to replace the tailgate on my 1984 Custom Cruiser. I have heard removing these are hard because if the dual action opening and I think I remember hearing torsion rods. Is that correct? Either way How is this best handled.

I'd start by getting one of these. $20 on ebay.

It should be about the same as my 91 OCC. There is a wire spring on the driver's side...open the gate as a door, and disconnect the spring. Disconnect the wiring and remove it from whichever end is easier. If there is a conduit between the gate and body remove that as well, Close the door and remove the nuts holding the driver's side hinges to the body. You can then open the gate as a door, and pull the hinge studs out of the body on the driver's side. You should have a very heavy tailgate in your hands. I suggest having a friend or two give you a little help with it. Install is the reverse.
