1955 olds carb problems

1955 olds carb problems

Hello Sirs,
I am having problems with the 4g rochester carb. It is not well adjusted. I have read the shop manual, I have translated it, and even thought it is hard to adjust it. The first thing I have tried to adjust is the floats bit there is a special tool needed that I do not have. I am talking about the gauge bt 89. It is important to use this tool to have the floats adjusted correctly isnt it?
there is a huge amount o petrol entering in the carb, so the car does not run well, and it is loosing petrol from the base of the carb. See picture. Also I have make a picture of couple of holes that puts a lot of petrol in the carb.

Carb is injecting peteol through this hole without pressing accelator

You can see the petrol in the base of the carb.

Also through this other hole

So I do not what to do. The best option to me would be to send the carb to a profesional carb repair who make all the adjustments, but i do not know if i would find somebody here in Spain. What you think friends? What ca I do?

From your description the float needs adjusting or the needle and seat is not closing off the fuel with the float.

Usually in the carburetor rebuild kit, there is a set of measurements for all the adjustments, including the float level. Should be in the shop manual, also. You do NOT need the special tool to adjust a float.

As mentioned, it sounds like either the floats are set too high or are rubbing on the bowl walls and not shutting off the fuel; or the needle/seat assembly is not able to shut off the fuel. Many repair kits will contain a tool to substitute for the BT-89. Another substitute for BT-89 is J5399A. If you have the 1955 Oldsmobile shop manual and a quality carburetor repair kit you should be able to correct the problem yourself, assuming there is nothing physically wrong with the carburetor.

Dear friends,

Unfortunately, I am suffering health issues that do not allow me to have enought contact with yhe forum and with my car. I would like to appologise for the delay in tje answer of this thread.

The last time I run the olds, was to have the technical inspection, and there was a steering problems which I will post in another thread.

The carb is not working well. I have bought a couple of carb resto kits in the last 3 or four years, and I didnt receive the gauge tool needed. Could anybody please inform me about a dealer who provides a kit that includes that tool?

Many carburetor kits have float gauges included with them. Here you can see some that I had used on a 2 barrel Rochester. The ones for the 4 barrel Rochester are similar. You don't need to have the BT-89 to do the adjustment.
