53 Battery Hold Down

Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone could help me locate the correct Battery hold down for my 53, there seem to be a couple of styles out there but the original has a frame which mounts to the inner fender....not sure about whether it should be just a frame with exposed terminals, or with a cover.?

And a Happy New Year to all.

I would think it would be just a frame like the third picture, but the cover looks nice .How close would the length and width be to a Olds valve cover . Maybe you could modify one off a '49 or '50 that had the bolt on plate on the top that said "Oldsmobile" .I think that would be Very Cool.
Those were painted green , with the plate on top that was lettered Oldsmobile Rocket painted gold. The letters were painted red. Google '49-'50 Oldsmobile valve covers.

From what I understand it should be a framewith support to the inner fender and a cover on top that I believe should beblack.
My car was missing so I made my own framejust around the battery… But found out that the support to the inner fender isa must.
I don’t think that neither Fusick or theother Olds part supplier carry them since I believe 53 was the only model with anarrow 12V battery

Cheers Larry, that would look cool, I do worry though about having a metal cover bridging both terminals....

Andreas, I think that's it, a frame which sits over and around the battery which is bolted to the fender, then the two long J bolts at each end of the frame connected to the Tray....picture 3 is the closest to the original setup I think?, but it isn't connected to the inner fender which it needs to be to make sure the battery doesn't topple over.

There's a part on eBay for '51-53 Buick Olds Pontiac called a (battery box tray support plate mount bracket) thats for the long 8volt batteries. They also carry the hold down frame and attaching J bolts, but no cover that I have been able to find. I'm wondering if the cover was a aftermarket item . As to the cover that I mentioned bridging both terminals ,you could give it clearance and also use the rubber covers that go over the terminals for extra protection.
Hope this helps,Larry

I Found it under another heading ('52 Buick parts) on EBay. Bring up that page and it's on the first page ,count 7 up from bottom of that page. It's called battery box tray support plater support mount bracket ($30).There's also metal hold down frames listed for 1953 Oldsmobile on eBay for $20. They are constantly adding parts but just one it's the seventh from the bottom of page. Good luck Larry

Larry, im a little embarrassed to admit this but here goes, I decided to clear out the trunk of my Olds today and go through all the stuff the PO had told me he put in there....well guess what I found? the Battery hold down!! and it is the covered type with a removable panel on top...no J bolts though, but they're easy to get hold of...I can't believe I didn't think to look sooner.

The Alminum looking cover in the first post by Eightbanger must have been an aftermarket item, but it looked great. I know I had to have sold many '53's back in the early 60's. or so, but I cannot remember those battery covers. Guess it' just old age . Larry

Yep, Those are like gold. Even if you find one, the top cover panel is usually missing. It took me four years to find the complete assembly for my '53.
