Question What would you pay for a parts car?

I have a chance to get a hold of a parts car for my 56 4 door HT. It is a 56 2 door post that has been sitting for a while but I'm pretty sure it's all there. I haven't seen it in person yet but the guy wants it gone and told me to make an offer. He also has a duel quad intake and some valve covers that will be extra. I don't need the intake so I will pass the info along to you guys when I get it along with some pics.

All I want off the car is the front sheet metal, the windshield if it's good and the drive train (radiator, engine, tranny, rearend) as a back up for mine along with the usual small stuff to fix my car up. The car has a title, needs quarters and maybe a pass side door.

If I got it I would part it out and either try to sell the rest on craigslist or sell it to someone on here for dirt cheap if not free. I don't have the room nor do I want to keep another car around for very long so it would have to go asap.

The guy says "make and offer, I want to see it gone." $500?

I would probably start out at $350-$400 but if it has the parts you need, it is worth $500.

All I really want is a good hood, anything else is just a bonus.

I think it would be worth it. I paid $350 for a 4dr '69 Delta and used the engine, transmission, various trim pieces and interior. Kept it for about a month and then scrapped the rest for $200. Worth it!

i payed 700 bucks for a good solid hood for my car, that was with shipping so anything cheaper then that is a great deal. also so you know i did a whole lotta searchin for a hood, actually a year to be exact, and i have found them out there for a 1000 bucks, so if that car has a great hood its worth 7 or 8 hundread bucks for sure...................john

Real hard to find parts for a 55 year old car, get them while you can. FWIW, the two door post cars are rare. It would make a great nostalgia gasser, lol.

I can't imagine using that cool 2 door post for a parts car !!! If you can get it for less than a grand, jump on it, but don't use it as a parts car. Deal it to someone who wants it to build, and make some cash, or trade it for a parts car and cash. If I was closer, I would sure be interested in making you a deal on it !!

Dual range Hydramatic

What you have is a mid year change of transmissions. Earley 56 Olds had the same transmissions as a 55. This was called a dual range hydramatic. About mid year the dual coupling jetaway hydramatic was used. In the 55 your park setting is achieved by putting car in the reverse and turning off the key, car will now be in park. Tedd

PS. both tranmissions are very good and strong.

Should be the same. I think everything in front of the doors is the same on all models. 98's, 88's and supers....Tedd

I paid way more for a non running 55 Holiday Sedan parts cars. Granted, had a ton of good parts, but point is you don't find decent cars of this era cheap - usually destroyed or someone wants $5000 for it. The drive train alone running is worth easily $500 plus - anything else on it would be 'gravy'. However, I tend to agree with other posts here in that it's too good to part! The Holiday Sedan I bought for parts I think I'm going to restore - I'll have to find another donor car - ugh...

Good luck to you

No they are not the same. '54-'56 2dr and 4dr post cars use a different windshield than the converts and hardtops.

This confuses me because the windshield channel (according to Fusick and Steele catalogs) is the same for all 55-56 except for convertibles - I would have answered yes to the question (i.e. they are interchangeable) - I've never actually swapped, but I would have lost that bet!

My four door sedan and four door hardtops look identical including the stainless...

Here are a couple of pics - never seen the ivory crank handles - and the standard steering wheel. Not sure if I have the heart to part this out - needs everything but what a unique car.

I am impressed the keys are in the ignition. I think it is too good to part out. I have a friend who has a 54 88 2-door sedan make into a NASCAR replica. It is street legal but has a rollbar in it. It is pretty cool. This would be a good candidate.

IF I get it (if not I will pass all the info along to you guys) I will use it to fix up my 56 Holiday 4 door hardtop (because I think that the 4 door HT has more style) and whatever is left from the 2 door will get sold or given away to someone that can use it or wants to build something out of it. Unless of course someone comes along with some cash and a nice hood or a nice hood and a rebuilt motor that I can store as a back up then I would trade/sell.

I do realize that this car is a nice starting point for someone BUT I already have a nice starting point, this car is local, hopefully cheap, has everything I need to get my car up to where I want it, will give me a back up drive train to clean up and store in case I ever need it and they aren't like a tri-five chevy where you can just pop open a website and order anything you need for cheap so you jump on the chance to get good parts.

The guy also has a dual quad intake and some other stuff that he is supposed to send me pics and prices on. I told him that I would pass the info along to you guys because I don't want a dual quad. I'm just waiting for his email.

Funny you noticed that - the only reason I have the ignition key is because the original paperwork was in the glove box and one of the pieces of information was the key numbers for both keys - I took the numbers to a local locksmith and for about $4 I had a set of keys...revealed flawless trunk upholstery!

Just got an email from them...

Car = $750 (I'm ganna low ball them with 600 and probably pay the 750)

Dual quad intakes (not sure how many or type but he mumbled something about Edmunds) = $650

Valvecovers (not sure what kind but I know they are aluminum) = $400

The car is a fair price but I think that the intakes and covers are kinda high.

Well the guy that was selling the 56 2 door decided after making the deal and setting the date to pick up backed out of the deal so now I still need to track down a decent hood.

Ouch...not good - and '56 hoods are as commonplace as hen's teeth...or honest politicians. If I hear of a hood lead I'll post it.
