What is this? 55 Olds

I am so sorry to be asking this, and embarrassed. I keep really good records, pictures, and notes about everything I do on the car, but this.

What in the world is this? It looks like the radiator mount, but it isn't. Obviously, it is some sort of rubber mount, splits in 2 pieces, in between. I tried it on the radiator bottom mount, but nothing I have matches up with the indentations in the rubber. The square is about 2" on a side.

Thanks in advance. I feel so stupid....

You must have had a '70-'72 Cutlass at some point? Or maybe '68-'69? That is the front frame horn to radiator support bushing. The round one goes in the frame horn & the square one sits on top of the horn.

Agreed, it looks a lot like a body mount, but alas, I did not take the body off--no need, and this is the only car I've been working on. All parts on the bench go to this car only.

Maybe as I assemble other parts I'll find something missing. The other thing that bothers me, is the size of the bolt hole. I don't have any bolts that size, except the radiator to frame mount bolt, and the indentations don't match the frame mount. Not the right washer, and the radiator mount I have fits perfectly.

The radiator mount on the car at the moment matches the service manual description.

I'm stumped.

Did you have the side windows off? It looks somewhat like a windlace rubber stop but hard to tell. by the photo it may be to big for that part... Tedd

Tedd,

Thanks, but no. This part is somehow associated with the firewall forward. Nothing else is apart at the moment.

It looks like a core support bushing.

It does. If it goes there, for the life of me, I can't figure out how it goes. I already have a bushing that goes at the bottom of the radiator/core support and mount, in the bracket on the front of the front cross-member.

I'll take a picture and post it.

It looks like you may have stumped the experts. Here are some questions. Is the round part and the square part both rubber? It looks like it has a steel sleeve in it; correct? Does the car have any options which we may not be very familiar with like A/C or the Valiant Driving Controls? How many parts like this are there? Just one? If it's forward of the firewall, that limits the possibilities some.

Ozzie,

Yes, both parts are rubber, with a steel sleeve in the round part. The car is a basic 88 Holiday 4-door no post. No power anything, no options. Simple basic. As far as I can find, this is a one off part. I'm sure I'll find where it goes when I've done a bit more assembly.

In the mean time, here are a couple of pictures of the lower radiator mount as installed. I think I go this one right. The parts match up and the indentations match on the rubber pieces to the frame and radiator assembly.

Under the radiator mount, is a square rubber pad, on top of the frame bracket. Then on the underside of the bracket is another rubber pad, on the bottom side of the lower rubber pad is about a 2" x 3" rectangular plate that fills the bracket underside, washer, lockwasher, nut.

Might anyone have a picture of their lower radiator mount? That at least would tell me if I got that part right. 54-56?

Thanks again, Dave

Ah Ha!!! Eureka!!! I found it.

I got the lower radiator mount correct, I tried playing with various bushing combinations, and that was not it. I had to settle on the original configuration pictured above. I could get the extra bushing in there, but it skewed other stuff.

It turns out, in the middle of the lower, very front gravel shield, is the front cross member. The one the bumper bolts to. There is about a 3/8" gap between the gravel shield, and the cross member. 59-59 was correct, it is a body mount that was repurposed for the gravel shield bushing. One part between the gravel shield, and one that is under the top rail of the front cross member. The bolt marks and rubber indentations line up perfectly.

Here are a couple of pictures of it installed. I almost missed it. Went right by a couple of times, and didn't see it. I presumed that the gravel shield bolted directly to the cross member, but there was this little gap, and that was enough to jog my memory of removing it. The thing that got me, was the bolt that holds it all together, with the vertical brace, is way too small for the steel sleeve in the rubber. That's what jogged my memory finally. When I took it apart, I thought, hmm, I hope I remember where this goes. Doesn't fit. I had that right!

Sorry for this last one, out of focus, but it shows the radiator mount from behind, and the underside of the gravel shield bushing, under the top rail of the front crossmember.

Got the second fender on, radiator, and most of the hood support structure. The bumper is cleaned and polished. Should be ready for the hood tomorrow. So far, everything has lined up perfectly. No issues. Amazing since the fenders are from an Oregon '56 car and mine is a Kansas '55.
