vacume tank 55 olds

Was hanging out under my Olds yesterday and noticed the vacume tank for the brake booster was dented and some what smashed.Anyone know if they are repoped by anyone. Dosen't look to be a big deal to make at a muffler shop as it is just a three inch tube twenty inches long with a plug on one end and fitting on the other, but it would be nice to just order one and not have to drag the car in and pay a custom price to have it fitted. Thanks Tedd

This question has come up from time to time and no one that I know of including myself has ever seen these re-poped. Your stuck with finding a used one or getting it repaired.

Unless you find a NOS one, I would just have a muffler shop build a new one. If you find a used one, chances are it will be rusted inside and be very thin. As you can see, they are pretty easy to build. Nice car by the way.

brake vacuum reservoir

Thanks all for the replies. That vacuum reservoir on Ebay looks interesting.I'm a little concerned about the added inch on the diameter as it would drop it down in harms way Even more. Don't tell the judges that it's not stock height, been getting away with that for years. Wonder how it captures that extra shot of vacuum each time the brakes are used ? .This could also fix the low vacuum problem with the wipers.Gotta look into this some more. Thanks again....Tedd

55 vacume resovoir

the vacume reserve tank is just that it has a check valve and engine vacume is stored so there are about three stops assisted after engine stops. the wipers vacume should be boosted by the fuel pump, is designed to maintain vacume at wipers while engine is under load, getting back to the tank under the left side near frame it is not a booster but merely a reserve tank

Frank, You are correct about the tank( reservoir)and I should have known about the fuel pump vacuum for the wipers, I have fought that issue for years. Buy chance do you have any idea why so many of us who have had our wiper motors and fuel pumps rebuilt are having problems with poor wiper action? I can't depend on my wipers at all if both blades are attached, I have come home a few times with only one wiper on the driver side working part time, not the safest of practices. Vacuum at the pump is as it should be about 10 in vacuum.I feel the rebuilt motors may be dragging or the grease that was used was to heavy. Something is causing drag somewhere and it doesn't seem to be in the cables or . Any one have any thoughts... Tedd

wipers

Tedd, i put a new wiper motor on my 55 and it has worked great for yrs, the wiper motor is probly worn out, also there were many problems with the vacume side of the fuel pump including sucking oil out of the engine and mixing it with the gasolene, however mine has worked perfectly for more than 20 yrs. i have owned these cars since they were new, so i know a little about them. i dont recall where i got the wiper motor except it came from new york. if i find the info i will send it on

Frank Allen, wiper motor is my old original that was rebuilt about 10 years ago as was the fuel pump. They might have been OK but I pretty much replaced or rebuilt every thing that went up and down or around and around at that time. It just seems funny that others and myself have had so many problems after wiper motors have been repaired, replaced . And yes I also can remember the rhythmic whack of vacuum wipers, I'm old enough to have grown up with them also....Tedd

I realize this is an older thread, but my 4 door sedan has one made of 3 inch diameter PVC pipe - capped on both ends with a treaded fitting on the business end - works perfectly - not correct obviously but could probably make in about 15 minutes for around $6 at home depot - a rattle can of black paint and you'd never know the difference!

vacuum tank

Olds Dad, good suggestion on using PVC pipe, never would have thought of that. how did you mount the tube to the frame? Maybe plumbers tape? Mines been repaired for some time now but this is something to remember for the next project....Tedd

Well - mine's on there with zip ties - "By Others" as they say. Not sure exactly how I'd do it if I was to start from scratch - most likely I'd start out with a grandiose plan of fabricating nice brackets to mount to the PVC and then screw to the frame as original...and then after a few beers end up using zip ties as the previous owner of mine did!!

You could probably use the large diameter band clamps (in stainless) and attach that way - might have to do some Mickey Mouse Engineering to attach them to the frame...would have to think about that one from the creeper for a while I think.
