Lower knuckle support stripped on '56?

I was getting a pretty good clank from the front fender area and kept getting worse. Saw that my lower pivot bushing was loose. It was not turning but the I could slide the knuckle support back and forth on the bushing. Tore it apart but now looks to me like it may be stripped...? Wasnt sure if it was supposed to be threaded or if the bushing just fit in tight as the treads on the new bushing are so shallow, but looking at my shop manual it looks to be. I went to torque on the new bushing, but it slides right in without any tension. Has anyone every encountered this before? Would welding it in be a bad idea? Or does anyone know of any interchange? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!
