Can anyone tell me how to check trans fluid level on '55 super 88 that I assume has a hydramatic? Also I read somewhere a good replacement for the original trans fluid would be Dextron III.

The correct procedure has the engine running in neutral after ideally driving car, or at least cycling transmission through all of the ranges, car placed on level surface, and at operating temperature. The dip stick has clear markings for low and proper fluid level, when running and hot. Creep up to the full mark, adding a little at a time until level is attained, DO NOT OVERFILL, EVEN IF TRANS IS A "LEAKER", will malfunction if the fluid level continuously envelopes the valve body when running. Modern Dexron is fine. Best - CW
