41 Olds oil pump

Looking for an answer:
My 1941 Olds oil pump has a hole bored in the end to accept the distributor, the dist. has a tang type connection not a gear. On the end of the oil pump are two slits to receive two pieces each of spring steel that lock in the tang from the dist. The pieces of spring steel have a notch cut in each end that lines up with a grove cut circumferentially on the outside of the pump shaft. I would like to know how to lock the pieces of spring steel to the pump shaft. They may have used wire or a snap ring to lock these two pieces of spring steel in place. My fear is that if their not held in place they would fall out into the oil pan if one were to remove the distributor.

Wow, this might be a tough one Robert as the only way I can think someone will know is if they have seen this problem before or if there is a service manual that addresses this. If you don't have one it would be very beneficial to get one. I hope someone can help you. If you could post some pictures maybe some of regular guys can help you figure it out, you know the way guys are visually oriented....
