394 Head Gaskets

I am putting the heads back on my 64 394. The factory shop manual says to put a sealer on both sides on the head gasket. I have new head gaskets, is this still necessary?

I have always sprayed on a coat of copper head gasket sealer when building an engine. Maybe belts and suspenders but never have had an issue.
