1956 98

Hi guys! Did all 1956 cars come with fan shrouds or just AC cars? I know in 55 all Pontiacs had shrouds. Does anyone know where I could find one? Also, an AC water pump and fan?

Thanks!

I think only AC cars had fan shrouds. I know that was the case in 54. I will try and look in my stash up in my attic this afternoon. I think I may have an extra AC water pump. You can use a six blade fan from Speedway Motors. I had one on my 54 before I went with the electric fan and shroud. I have a shroud I bought for a 52 but it is off a little on size.

Thanks for the info! Do you know which fan is correct from that company for 56? Also and ideas where I could get a 56 shroud? I'm willing to pay the price if they're rare. Thanks!

Here's a member selling a 1955 shroud. I don't know if they interchange, but am thinking they might. John

Thanks! He actually contacted me and I'm buying his shroud and radiator for $175 because it's a package deal. Just going to use the shroud though.

If it was a year ago I would have been all over those. And he is close to me. I actually sold him a windshield.

The shrouds have the same part number 1954-56. The radiators have different part numbers. Even the "R" H.T. radiator is different from the "O" H.T. radiator for 1956. Both are different from the 1955.

The 56 might have cooling lines for the jetaway transmission. Seems I remember it used them but I am not sure.

You are correct, which is why I couldn't use his radiator but I was able to buy his shroud and it's on the way! Is there anyway I can determine if I have the AC water pump without taking it off? Someone mentioned I could buy the correct AC cooling fan from a company, is there a way to know which is the correct one? I don't see a 5 blade there. Thanks!

Thanks for the reassurance on the shroud! A big relief knowing I did get the right one

The water pumps for the A/C cars had a larger diameter bearing to better be able to take the belt loads. It is easily recognizable from the exterior when comparing to the standard pumps. This will probably not do you much good on the fan, but here's the information from the Olds parts book: Oldsmobile referred to the A/C cars as C.A.C. (car air conditioning).
The CAC fan's part number was 565592. It fit 1953 with Dynaflow, 1954-56 with CAC and 1958 with CAC. It had 6 blades. (The standard fan had 4 blades.) The spacer was 1-11/16" thick, & had part number 563232. The attaching bolts were 5/16"-18 x 1-3/4".

Back in the '50s Oldsmobiles had a chassis parts book and a body parts book. Some have been reproduced. Usually the chassis book will prove more useful, unless of course are working on the body.

My 55 base 88 4-door Holiday, non AC car, has a 4-blade fan, and no shroud.

Glad you found what you needed.

AC stuff is getting hard to find you did good on that shroud and jet a way transmissions need radiators with a outlet and inlet for the transmission cooler lines, slant pans do not.... Tedd

Maybe too late for this discussion or maybe already covered, but my 56 Super 88 with C.A.C. has a six blade fan, a fan shroud and the radiator has cooling lines for the jetaway transmission.
