1953 88 Universal Joint

Unfortunately while I was cruising yesterday, my U-joint on the rear of the driveshaft where it meets the axle failed and broke and now I am on the hunt for a new one.
Everything I find for a replacement part states that it is for Olds 98.
My question for anyone who would know is, is the U-Joint the same for both 88 and 98 ?

And also, would anyone have any good leads on a part ?

Summit and O'Reilly's both seem to have this in stock. Just not 100% its a match

Any help or info would be much appreciated!

Rockauto has them. The 88 and 98 should be the same. Here is a link.

Excellent !
that looks like the one.

I also called Fusick and they had some NOS parts available, so I may try to order both sets and just hope and pray at least one of them fits!

Thanks for the help !

Just go to the local autoparts store. This way if you accidentally get the wrong one you can exchange it easily.

When you install your new joint, make sure the grease fitting is on the same plane for each one. Makes it easier to grease.

Eric I would be surprised if the local auto parts store has one. The rear one is different and the caps have flanges that bolt to the third member. They don't even carry a thermostat housing gasket or carb base gasket.

Exactly. I dont even bother with local auto parts stores anymore. These days the staff that work there know little more than how to enter a part number into the computer. Chances are none of them will have it.

Luckily Fusick said they have a batch of NOS pieces they grabbed. So I ordered from them.

All of the shops in my area dont have the time or patience to try and hunt down or measure for the right part due to the current state of things.

You will find Fusick to usually be considerably higher than other places. I think some kids on parts counters don't even know what an Oldsmobile is. They were born after Olds was discontinued.

im okay with paying a little more to Fusick because they know what theyre talking about, and they have quality stuff. And their stuff gets delivered to me the next day.

I would much rather buy something quality the first time around.

As Americans we have pushed for so long to save a few bucks on parts, and now theyre all made in China or overseas, and then we complain that they're all junk. 😄

I hate to tell you that most of the stuff you buy from Fusick is made in China. They do have some good folks there but the quality of some of their stuff leaves something to be desired. I had a set of plug wires and an ignition switch that I had to send back. I will always buy Made in the USA stuff when I can get it. I get my points and condensers off ebay. They are the old Delco Remy stuff that is made in the USA and not China or Mexico like the stuff is now.

In case it's needed for anything, the Oldsmobile Chassis parts book shows for group 5.548, "Universal Joint Repair Kit", part number 564274 for 1953 All (rear). 88 and 98 should be the same part.

I replaced on my 1953 S-88 some 7-8 years ago, From my memory one of them were a common size and one was a unique Olds.
Ended up using one NOS that I got from Fusick and one new that was from a common auto store, found a pictures from that time (sorry for the Swedish text..).
