1950 Olds gas tank pickup tube
1950 Olds gas tank pickup tube
Question: Where is the gas tank sender and pickup tube located? I lifted the trunk floor covering and don't see it. The problem is my gas line appears clogged out of the tank. When I shoot air back into it, the gas comes gushing out. Many months later it clogs again. The fuel filter mounted on the frame rail is not clogged. I'm assuming that the sock on the inlet tube is torn or not there at all and the blast of air clears it for awhile.

If the fuel pickup tube repeatedly clogs, then there must be a lot of foreign material in the tank.
The best way to solve the problem is to remove and clean the tank.
The gas tank sender and pickup tube are attached to the top of the tank.
They can't be accessed unless the tank is removed.
On my '63, my gas tank had a couple of gallons of old gas that was like kerosene.
It also had a lot of dirt, rust, and sludge.
I removed the tank and removed the sending unit
I stuck a pressure washer in the tank and washed the crud out.
Then I put a shop vac hose in there to vacuum out all the water and dirt.

Charlie, thanks. I suspected as much. I assume I have rust in the tank which occasionally blocks the fuel pick up tube. Ironically the fuel filter downstream from it is not clogged and shows very minor rust particles.
Could be almost anything has been put in that tank in the last 74 years.
An old rag, a dead mouse, who knows?
Only way to know is to remove the tank and sending unit.
Does the gas gauge work?
If not, the sender may need repair.
The procedure to test it should be in the 1950 Oldsmobile Shop Manual.
