1948 Turn Signal Issues - 6 volt
Hello,
For some reason I cannot figure out why my turn signals are not working.
When I activate the Signal lever the red light illuminates on the lever, however does not flash.
The bulbs also do not illuminate.
Any ideas?
Thanks

As far as aftermarket, it looks REALLY old. Same interior color as the steering column. It has a flasher under the dash. I just ordered a new one yesterday so I'll try it out later today.
Please explain what you mean by "chase it backwards".
Thanks

Find the last place you have a good 6 v and the first place you don't from that live wire. Somewhere between the two the juice is lost. Very well may be the flasher. One of the wires going to it should be hot on one side with the key on flasher engaged... Tedd

Signal Stat is the relay that causes the lights to blink. 1 bad bulb would either cause the lights on that side not to blink or blink faster. Generally does not affect both sides. Can you post a picture of the unit on the column?

I will post a pic tomorrow of the unit.
Thanks!!

Good morning,
So here’s the latest turn signal saga.
My new flasher arrived yesterday. I plugged it in and YAY! They are blinking now!
HOWEVER – All 4 are blinking at the same time!! Like I have hazards on.
So here are my questions:
1. I think I have 3 wires from signal lever to “somewhere under the dash”. I know at least one goes to my headlight switch; which I just replaced last week.
2. Where are the wires supposed to go?
3. The signals operate with key on….AND OFF. They must be connect to battery hot all the time.
4. I’m thinking I may have “the perfect storm” going on. I just replaced my headlight switch with an NOS one last week. Was my flasher bad as well and now I may have hooked up the wires to the new headlight switch incorrectly?
Any help would be great. Here’s a couple pics.

Still trying to solve my 4 way flash issue.
I spent an hour under my dash last night with blood rushing to my head and feet touching dome lamp. I have the correct wires running from my signal lever to the running and tail lamps. Correct wires running from my lever to brake switch.
The only thing I see is that the previous owner has the signal power wire going to a “HOT all the time” lead on the headlight switch instead of the ignition. Key out you can operate signals.
Could this be the issue? I have not tried yet.
Could I have been given a faulty flasher?

Grounding issues are the cause for so many electrical gremlins. I'd encourage you to first figure out how that system is grounded, then test to be sure those grounds are working well. Is the signal unit grounded? Should it be? experiment with making new grounds to the light circuit and/or the signal device. Be absolutely sure the grounds are working. I use an ohm meeter to be sure.

I don't think your car ever came with, a hazard feature, all 4 blinking at the same time makes me think you are getting feedback (short) from your hot side that is already in question. You might try divorcing the hot side and replacing that wire to a hot only with key on side of the ignition like the original had.. Another thought is that there could be a short in the turn signal itself, back feeding both sides of the switch bulbs, a bad ground as mentioned before could cause this....Tedd
