59 dynamic 88 trans questions

Well i pulled our 59 olds dynamic 88 out of the shed and i am getting it running so we can enjoy it. it is running good now but need some help with the trans. The tranny fluid still looks pretty good but i still wanna change it and change the filter. from what i understand it has a jetaway hydramatic 4 spd correct? My question is where can i find a filter and gasket? I doubt i could goto napa etc and find what i need. Also how many qts of dexron does it take. it seems to be slipping too much so i may also add some lucas but i understand it is designed to slip to smooth shifts so i will see how it acts after the new fluid and filter.

thanks guys, i am new to olds, im a ford guy

You are in luck - you dont need a filter as this year Hyrdamatic uses a brass screen. This screen can just be cleaned out by hand or compressed air. As far as the gasket goes, NAPA had one in my hand in 2 days - Fusick also has these in stock. 11 - 12 quarts are needed when the pan is dropped for the fluid change

We'll get you to the dark side...

I can't say much. I have a 93 F150 4x4 and have owned several Fords in the past. A 65-68 Thunderbird is kinda high on my want list now, since those are still priced fairly reasonable and would complement my Starfires. A mid-60s Chrysler 300 would be another good Starfire companion. Then a Pontiac GP and a Buick Wildcat. Then I'd have to add onto the garage!

Hmm- Jetaways usually had fairly firm shifts IIRC. Mama's 60 did anyway; when they got the 70 Cutlass I remember her mentioning how it didn't shift as firm and didn't shift enough times! Plus she had just a little trouble getting used to the Turbo 350 shift pattern- can't tell you how many times she yanked it all the way down wanting reverse, only to find she had put the car in Low. When you had driven HydraMatics as long as she had...

I expect you may have some slippage from the fluid draining off everything while the car sat unused. Change it with Dexron and see what it does.

i am hoping the flush, lucas and filter cleaning will help out. It is slipping badly. When i put it into reverse it takes awhile to go into reverse and i have to give it gas before it will go then there is a little shake and a weird "slipping/creaking" sound but this is only in reverse. it slips quite a bit while driving too, shifts are slow etc

Jetaway (like the Roto) had 4 speeds, but you could only feel one shift.

Likely, she was used to driving a "real" (three solid shifts) Hydro, and her opinion (along with mine) was in the minority.

Seems, there were a lot of buyers that were impressed with the smoothness of the '53 Cad/Olds Dynaflows, and Pontiac Powerglides.

GM listened, and introduced the Jetaway in '56.

well i got it all finished up today and so far so good. Drained it cleaned out the filter (not bad suprisingly) sealed up and filled it up. I threw in a bottle of lucas trans fix and it is working good now. doesnt slip like it did before and it hasnt done the weird reverse thing yet either

Yeah, the Dynaflow was smooth alright, NO SHIFTS, Powerglide second with ONE SHIFT, Jetaway actually shifted 3 times although the 2-3 shift was the only one that really stood out, the others covered up by the controlled coupling.

The Roto 5 and Roto 10 were, in fact 3 speed units. Both were referred to as 4 STAGE transmissions. Each only had 3 speed gearsets.

The Roto-5 had ratios of 3.03/1.57/1.00 and the stator provided a 1.2 reduction at stall hence the first "stage" of 3.64 to 1.

The Roto-10 has ratios of 2.93/1.56/1.00 to 1.
