67 th 400 switch pitch odd behavior
67 th 400 switch pitch odd behavior
I may get to run the 442 this weekend, so I figured I'd ask.
This car is a project that has progressed from dead when bought to somewhat drivable now. I haven't been able to keep it near home in years, but I will next year, and should move along from there.
It's got new plugs, cap, coil, wires, rotor, points. Timing may be off, since it takes a lot of pedal to get going. Higher RPM has more power and it will chirp tires going from 1 to 2. Problem is, it does fine in 1 and 2, but, once into high gear, the rpm surges like it can't make up its mind if it wants second or third and it won't go any faster, this is around 35 or so mph.
I don't know if the converter is switching back and forth, or if the trans is slipping. If this sounds like a familiar behavior, let me know. I aim to get the timing done and the carb checked out and at least get the engine right. TH400 apparently had a shift kit put in by previous owner because it shifts very hard. It may be something that just will get fixed when it gets rebuilt.
Thanks.

To see if the switch is working you should have 12v on SP solenoid connection just above idle and then it turns off and then the 12v should come back at around WOT. The other terminal on the switch (kick down solenoid) should only come on at WOT. Also make sure the trans is full in park (engine running) when it is completely warmed up.
It would help you a lot to own a factory service manual for your car, sometimes see them on ebay. Next best idea is to join;
http://wildaboutcarsonline.com/cgi-b...plate.cgi?id=8
It's free, and you can look at the service manual and print what you need.
I say all this because it sounds like your linkage/kickdown switch could be badly out of adjustment. It is not a hard job, doesn't take long, but too involved for me to type all the instructions here.

iirc, there is an orange wire connected to the kickdown/pitch switch. disconnect it and it will disable kickdown and pitch switching. take the car out for a ride and see what it does. also, iirc, the converter will be in low angle without power to the switch.
