It is normal to have a small gap
between the flexplate and torque
converter on install. No more than
1/2 inch or so though.

approx 1/4" is normal --- You should be concerned when the is NO clearance!! You have to have the gap to allow for heat expansion -- otherwise the converter would bind up in the pump!

How far are the mounting pads from the flexplate?

That's what I was describing above - distance between mounting lug and flexplate. Typically you must move the converter about 1/4" toward the flexplate for the lug to contact flexplate and then install the bolts.

I agree, I was wondering what the OP's gap was. I know that in some cases shims need to be used.
