Hey guys, i need help figuring out why the car won’t shift, it only stays in first, and can go into reverse and neutral and park fine, the cable seems fine, but the fluid was near empty so I filled it up on a running engine, still won’t shift. Do I need to do anything else or what should I look for, thank you!

 

Check the vacuum modulator and the attached vacuum line. Also check the kickdown, make sure it is not engaged.

 

Do you know what transmission it has?

Check as mentioned above and it may be stuck governor weights.

Get the fluid level precisely full warm.

im not entirely sure i don’t even think it’s the original transmission. This one seems to have sensors, but I’m not really sure, and where are the governor weights?

 

Be a TH 350, wouldn't it?

The vacuum modulator is located at the rear of the trans, on the passenger side. Look for a round canister held in place by a bracket with a single bolt.

 

There is no reason to start multiple threads for the same problem. The modulator is on the right rear of the transmission just above the pan with a vacuum line connected to it.

It looks like this

 

Pull the governor, I bet the plastic gear is stripped. Simple fix and it will cause it to stay in first gear
