Z Bar installation complication

Im trying to convert my 1971 442 to a manual trans. I bought a conversion kit but unfortunately the z bar is incorrect. However, the mount on the block seems to be a few inches too far forward from the mount on the frame. What could be the cause of this? Also, most of the conversion kits seem to have the mount being a 1/2" thread, while the one on my block is 3/8".

I have a cheap set of headers on the car now that i believe are the reason its difficult for the z bar to get into place, but even with correct headers the mounts seem like they are going to be too far apart. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Thank you so much, Im going to see if i have that hole drilled out tomorrow. Ive been looking at the flowtech ceramic headers since they are affordable, will they clear the z bar?

You are trying to use the hole for the starter brace. It is on an "ear" hanging from the block. You want the bigger threaded hole several inches farther back; it goes right into the block, not an ear.

I would highly recommend you forget the flowtechs and buy a set of the Hooker Comp headers.

I was looking really hard at the flowtechs for my build due to the price- But at the advice of another member i shelled out a little bit more ($240) for the hookers.... MUCH better value- nice thick flanges- quality welds.

I've seen Chevy flowtech's in person and they aren't even remotely as nice as these hookers. Well worth the extra $100.

Did the hookers fit in without any problems? Clearing the Z bar (if your's is a manual), proportioning valve, etc.

I seen people make brackets that fasten to the side of the block, then, attache the ball stud
