Wide Open Throttle Shifts - 6,000 RPM Th350

I am on to my 2nd th350 rebuild. The first one went well. I followed Ron Sessions book and the mods found here https://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/...0_rebuild_tech

I built the first transmission for my 455 Olds and it shifts right where I want it to - 5,000 rpm in DRIVE.

However, on this next trans th350 that I build, I want it to shift at 6,000 in DRIVE.

How do I go about adjusting the WOT shift points? I want to keep the part throttle shift points stock.

You have to change the governor weights. You can either grind a little weight off each one or buy a kit from B&M or TCI and they have instructions. The weights you grind are the small ones under the big heavy ones one the outside of the governor. Grind a little and take it for a test drive and keep going til you are happy. When you take the governor cover off you will lose a little oil but not much.

I would suggest starting with another govenor, and take detailed notes. If you have access to a scale that will measure grams, that would help. Depending what car your working on, the govenor cover is a pain to remove and install. Good luck!

You bet. I’ll get to it in the next couple of months. Just wrapping up the engine.

Thanks for the kit link. I'm dying to experiment. There are a couple videos on youtube of people grinding the weights. I get nauseous if they move the camera around too fast on some videos, but the info is good.

The govenor is MUCH easier to get to on a 400. The TH350 govenor cover is a press for, the 400 has 4 bolts.

Once again, I’d suggest starting with a donor govenor. It wouldn’t hurt to take it apart and weigh the weights first, then you would know which way you need to go with new parts. Take detailed notes, try and use the same test procedure.
Good luck!

A couple govenor recipes I found on V8Buick forum

Th400 govenor abd TH350 govenor are supposedly the same, other than the gears. I would guess since the interchange, maybe the same recipe will have similar results. I haven’t tried it to know for sure.
