Trans ID

I purchased a 70 Olds Cut. Sup. with a manual trans. I was told the numbers are on the drivers side of the trans. I found a little metal tag bolted to it and I was wondering if that is what I am looking for or would they be stamped? Also told this was a rare car with this trans anyone have any info on this?

Thanks,

Brad

Brad, jot down the numbers stamped on the tag and post them as a reply. Also, check for any letters and numbers on the passenger side. Guys on this forum can give you feedback.

Look on the vertical flange on the backend of the main case. Stamped into the case flange should be the VIN derivative. Should be something like 30Mxxxxxx and match the latter part of your VIN. If it is the original trans.

I tried to find some pictures that show the numbers you need to look for but struck out. This is the best I could come up with. Your looking for numbers stamped into the main body housing, near where it mates up to the tail shaft portion. The short number that starts with a "P" identifies it as a Muncie, then the build date, and if it's a M20, M21 or M22. The vin number will be a longer number and on one of these transmissions it's stamped on the top, the other on the side. It's been too many years since I had a factory transmission out of an Oldsmobile, I believe it may be stamped on the passengerside. Hope this helps. John

??? Great pics! What can't you find? Looks like in this pic you're pointing to the Muncie date code, and just behind it is the VIN derivative. No?

One tranismission is out of a 1970 Chebby, the other I'm told came out of a 1967 Poncho. I used to have pictures of a 1972 442 getting the clutch replaced with the muncie transmission out of it. I thought the vin number was stamped in a different location and didn't want to lead him astray. Thats my comment on not exactly the right photos

Looks like the pic I referred to is the '70 Chebby, as it looks the the VIN derivative is "10?126004" which the "10" would be Chebby, 1970. I can't make out the third digit which would be a letter for the plant code.

Yup, that's what to look for and where to look!
