Speedometer issues 1956er

Hello, my name's Phil an I'm from Germany.

I recently bought a 1956 OM 88 4-door sedan and started some restauration.
When it came to the speedometer, the speedometer-cable was pulled off the speedometer itself. The next thing I noticed was that the speedometer was on "full speed" (see the picture attached).

Is this normal or is it broken?

Something's wrong inside there.

You may be able to correct it by taking it apart and removing a bit of rust or debris that is jamming it, otherwise, it will need a visit to an instrument restorer (or clockmaker).

Welcome to ClassicOlds.
