Slim Jim Hydramatic

When (why?) did the term "Slim Jim" come to describe Hydra-matic transmissions of the late 50s & early 60s? Was there a skinny GM engineer named James? Or some other reason?

The Roto-Hydramatic was designed to present a lower profile so that the transmission "hump" could be made smaller, The idea was to provide the center passenger in the front seat with more comfort and legroom.
I don't know the origin of the term "slim Jim" but my guess would be that it came from the automotive press. Perhaps in a road test article.

Line up a TH350, a TH 400, and a Rotohydramatic and you'll see where the name comes from.

Welcome to ClassicOlds now, BenDover.
