Need new torque converter but what size...???

Need new torque converter but what size...???

I'm working on a 73 olds omega with a stock th350 transmission and 350 rocket. I do have an after marker RPM performance intake and cam with a holly carb. My problem is when slipping out of park to 1st I get this huge jolt and will usally stall unless I feed some gas just before the gear change. I'm almost possitive it's because the stock converter can't compinsate for the power. My father is saying I need a converter in the 2800-2900 range but multiple auto stores are saying a 2400-2600 will suffice. If I do get the higher range one will that be michanicaly okay for my car or should I stick with the 2400-2600. Please let me know what you think

Ps. If you know what range the stock converter is that'd be great to know too.

Most stock converters are around 1800 rpm.

If you get a GOOD quality converter it wont feel mushy at part throttle. I would go 2600-2800. Im pretty sure Coan doesnt charge extra for a custom converter.

This does not sound like a torque converter issue to me. What cam do you have in it?

I'm taking this to mean he has the RPM cam also.

@.050 224 int./234 exh. and 0.496 int./0.520 exh.

What rpm is it turning when you put it in gear?


I wouldn't think about changing a torque convertor until and unless you are sure that is the problem. Reminds me of when my 69 GTO back in 1972 was having a hard time going more than 45 or 50 up hills on the PA Turnpike. I was "sure" it was a fuel pump, so I pulled into a service station and told the mechanic I needed a fuel pump. He installed one and I paid him, but it had no effect. I paid for an unneeded repair, and he was correct when he said I didn't ask for his diagnosis, I asked him to put on a fuel pump, which he did.

X2. I had a bigger cam than that in my 350 with stock converter with no issues.

New Converter......

X2 brown7373 on idle RPM, with a couple of questions.


What is the idle RPM when cold on the fast idle cam and when warmed up at curb idle?
