Muncie Crossmember

Does anyone know if the 4-speed crossmembers are the same 66 thru 72 442? I know the tail shafts on the Muncie can be different also. Is any one Muncie tranny also longer than the other?

Thanks

Dave

To the best of my knowledge there was only one crossmember on the 68-72 cars.

I know Chevelles had a different 4 speed cross member to mount the muncie shifter to. However, Cutlass used Hurst shifters so I believe cross members were same auto or 4 speed for the year ranges (i.e. 68-72 all the same auto or 4 speed but 67 and earlier different). Also, convertibles had their own cross member because the frame is boxed.

65-66 full size Oldsmobiles and 65-68 full size Pontiacs used a long tail shaft Muncie 4 spds. All other Muncie 4spds were short tails.

Thanks everyone for your input so far, I guess the next question?: How can I tell if my cross member and drive shaft are correct on my 66? It currently has a 72 Munice in it and Im switching it to an original 66 442 tranny. Just dont want to get half way through the job and find out the crossmember and drive shaft is incorrect- if I can help it -

With the 72 Muncie currently installed, will the current crossmember work with a 66 Muncie?

Crossmember works assuming it wasn't cobbled up. A 72 Muncie has a larger output shaft than the 66 muncie. So if it's actually a 72 Muncie you will have to switch drive shaft yoke to the smaller 66 style driveshaft yoke. In 66 4spds and automatics shared the same size yokes.

are you sure? i think all M20 and M21s were the same output shaft size as a th350. the M22 was bigger like the th400. i thought the only shaft difference was the shaft for the cluster gear in 66.

My '71 M20 has the 32 spine output shaft, weren't the earlier (64-70) Muncies all 27 spine?

Late Muncies also have 26 spline inputs instead of the 10 spline.

Shouldn't be a problem with your current Cross Member.
I am using a 65 GTO frame, the 64 cross member and a Mustang T5 with no issues.
