Muncie Crossmember
Muncie Crossmember
Does anyone know if the 4-speed crossmembers are the same 66 thru 72 442? I know the tail shafts on the Muncie can be different also. Is any one Muncie tranny also longer than the other?
Thanks

Thanks

I know Chevelles had a different 4 speed cross member to mount the muncie shifter to. However, Cutlass used Hurst shifters so I believe cross members were same auto or 4 speed for the year ranges (i.e. 68-72 all the same auto or 4 speed but 67 and earlier different). Also, convertibles had their own cross member because the frame is boxed.
Thanks everyone for your input so far, I guess the next question?: How can I tell if my cross member and drive shaft are correct on my 66? It currently has a 72 Munice in it and Im switching it to an original 66 442 tranny. Just dont want to get half way through the job and find out the crossmember and drive shaft is incorrect- if I can help it -

Crossmember works assuming it wasn't cobbled up. A 72 Muncie has a larger output shaft than the 66 muncie. So if it's actually a 72 Muncie you will have to switch drive shaft yoke to the smaller 66 style driveshaft yoke. In 66 4spds and automatics shared the same size yokes.
