Leaking Jetaway - '65 Vista Cruiser
Leaking Jetaway - '65 Vista Cruiser
The two-speed Jetaway (aka Junkaway, I know) on my '65 Vista Cruiser has a slow leak, that I thought was coming from the dipstick tube. I replaced the o-ring on that tube (it was a bear to do), but the leak persists, and I have yet to track it down. I've seen threads indicating that they're prone to leak from the torque converter, especially when parked for a while. I did have a '66 F-85 Deluxe with the same tranny, and it never ever leaked. So four questions:
- Is a '65 Jetaway the same as a '66? If not, is the '66 less prone to leak?
- Where are the likely sources of leakage?
- Am I better off junking the Jetaway and installing another transmission? This is just a driver and, other than the leak, it drives fine.
- If the tranny is removed, is that the time to replace the rear main seal? It has a very slow oil leak.
If your hell bent on finding the leak clean it and place some cardboard underneath and follow it upstream, blowing baking powder on the trans can aid in seeing the path. You can really hi tech and get some dye and a blacklight. As far as the trans, I think for basic cruising the Jetaway is fine.
Me personally, if its just a small leak leave cardboard under it and replace every so often.

The 64-67 Jetaways are essentially identical. There are a number of seals that can leak, and case porosity is a potential source as well. If you really want to find the leak, steam clean the case and spritz talcum powder over it. The red stains will lead you to the leak. If it is coming from the bottom, there are many sources, including the front seal (converter to pump seal) and the pump-to-case gasket.
