Found Muncie M20--I think. Will this swap into my 70 Cutlass?
Thanks to all who are helping me with this project--swapping in a Muncie 4 speed into my 70 Cutlass automatic. Below are pictures of a Muncie M20 that I have found locally for sale. Couple of questions:
1. Is it an M20? I believe the rings on the input shaft identify the unit as an M20. And is the M20 going to work best with my Chevy posi with approximately 3.30's and 500 HP 455?
2. Will the linkage in the pics be able to be used in the swap?
3. Will the shifter be able to be used in the sway? I kind of doubt the chrome shifter piece will work--I am using a console.
The guy wants $700 for the trans and its local. I am going to grab it depending on your thoughts.
Thanks again.

2 grooves on the input shaft means that the input shaft is original to an M-20 but does not guarantee that there are wide ratio M-20 gears in the trans. What are the stamping on the trans case?
the 70-72 auto console is used in 4 speed applications with some additional pieces and cutting along pre marked locations on the console.
The shifter handle appears to be the correct one for a 70-72 console application.
You made no mention of the trans condition. However an M-20 and Chevy 3.31 gears is a good combination.
You may not be aware but you crank is most likely not drilled for the 4 speed input shaft so this is not a direct bolt in without other work to the crank or the use of an adapter bearing.

I should also note that I bought an aftermarket Competition Plus for my 1972 442 4spd car back in the late 1970s. That shifter had an "L" shaped bracket welded to the top of the shifter where the stick bolted on. This allowed a straight stick to line up in the factory console, something like this one:

Thanks for the input.
Getting case numbers and will post them. Just to confirm, 70 Cutlass needs speedo input on passenger side--like the M20 I am looking at??
Will I be able to use the linkage?
How are we liking the 3.30's with M20? Full street. Stop light to stop light. Freeway top down cruiser too.

"010" main case was used 1966-67 model year...
P7P30-----Sept. 30th 1966 for an early 1967 model car...
The linkage in the picture appears to be Hurst after market for a
1968-74 Corvette, which locates the shifter to far to the rear for a 1968-72
GM A-body...
Hope this help... Crash

Shifter
[QUOTE=joe_padavano;1008187]I'm pretty sure it is not. Note this is a bolt-on stick, so it is an aftermarket shifter and stick. The OEM shifters all used snap-in sticks. The correct shifter and stick for the 1970-72 consoles look like this:
I saw the bend in the shifter in picture #4 and thought it was a console specific shifter. However you are correct it is not what I thought it was and the bolt-on handle confirms it. Thanks for the correction.
