The adjustments are in the cable attachment to the transmission gear selection lever.

I had the same issue and it took quite a bit of experimentation in order to get the adjustment correct, and this was with a factory shifter, cable, and transmission gear select lever that originally came on the car. I had to adjust so the trans would just barely go into both 1st and Park in order to get both ends of the span set properly.

If you have any aftermarket parts they may not be made correctly. Are you certain you have a DG cable and not the regular shifter cable? And what about the trans select lever?

I recall a post where someone using aftermarket parts had to elongate the slot in the trans select lever in order to gain more travel and be able to get into both Park and 1st.

That's exactly what I did. I also file the slot longer in the dual gate shifter for go to low 1st.
