HI ALL. I'm putting a '455 in a '57 Super 88 and considering putting a 4L60E behind it. I just want a comfortable highway cruiser. Has anyone done this, will the trans handle the '455? And what should I pay for one? What converter should I use? Sorry! thanks, Bill.

Hopefully you are aware that the xxxxE transmissions all require a control computer to operate. Aftermarket controllers run in the $1000 range. If you don't want to incur that cost, most folks run either a 700R4 or a 200-4R. Neither one will survive in stock form. The 200-4R is the easier unit to bolt to an Olds, but both have been done. Use the SEARCH function to find many threads on the topic.

If you do want an electronic trans, understand that the 4L60E/4L65E/4L70E are similar and are all derived from the 700R4. The 4L80E is essentially a TH400 with an overdrive gear set and clutches between the torque converter and the rest of the trans. Many of the internal hard parts in a 4L80E interchange with TH400 parts. This is the only GM 4spd AT that will live behind a BBO in stock form. It only comes with a Chevy bellhousing, so you need an adapter. As noted, it needs the stand-alone controller. It's also somewhat longer than a TH400, but since you're putting it in a 57, there will be mods required in any case.

Any of them can be done. The 4l60e is an electronic version of the 700r4, not the stoutest of transmissions, but depending on your 455 might be up to the task. Is there any reason you want to go with an electronically controlled transmission? Any of these will require a stand alone transmission control unit to work behind your 455, as well as requiring an adaptor plate to fit the Olds engine bolt pattern. You'll be looking at around $600 for a FAST TCI TCU unit to run any of those trans. Stock the 4l80e is a much stronger transmission but it's big and will most likely require tunnel modifications to fit, but don't know personally how much room those older cars have. As far as converter goes, to determine the best fit you'd need to factor in your engine combo, (cam compression etc) as well as your rear gear. Do a little research and you'll find the best fit.

Other than that, you could look into either a 2004r or 700r4 which wouldn't require the control unit, but would require a TV Cable setup and depending on your converter probably a lock up control setup. Also, the 2004r has a universal bellhousing bolt pattern and bolts straight to an olds, but needs built to handle the torque of a 455. I can attest that the lockup and TV setup will be over $350 to do right, so it's not that much more to go full computer control.

Either way, do some research and pick what works best for you and have fun!

Edit:
Joe beat me to the punch.
