455 with a TH400, Need BOP Housing?

Just curious if its best to try and find a TH400 BOP to go with my 455 engine, or will any TH400 work?

Most parts vendors offer an adapter that will mate up to the BOP bolt pattern. Depending on your budget (can you afford to buy whatever you want in a transmission) and, performance needs. If you are trying to make a monster under the hood I would find a TH 400 with a BOP bolt pattern because the rigidity of the adapter could come into question when put under other than normal performance conditions. Jegs and Summit both offer an adapter in the area of 70$ I think.

Can you fit a BOP bellhousing from a TH350 on a TH400?

bellhousing is integrated into the case and th400 is bigger and heavier in size and very diffrent internals . when i went from a th350 to th400 i had to shorten my driveshaft like 5 inches

Chevy's are the oddball. There are might be more BOP/C's out there than chevy TH400's.

Just read some place else that there are 2 different 400 tail sizes. I also read the shorter one is the better one to have for higher HP motors? Anyone have a preference?

Short tail shaft definitely...

Also, a TH-350 and TH-400 have the same size bell housing...you can run either one, the TH-400 is just preferred because of the internals.

Yeah, the one that goes with the chassis you have. There are THREE different TH400 tailhousings (four, actually, if you count the 4WD version) and each is specific to certain chassis types (A-body, B-body, etc.)

I prefer the 9" tail shaft. The less driveshaft the better in my opinion. Much easier for me to set up the drive line angle as well. Rise over run becomes a headache real fast with a lot of run, and no rise.

Pretty much every 80's C body has drive line noise, as do most of the long wheelbase 90's chevy trucks. They're simply a horrible setup. Both the trans and the pinion have their d1ck in the dirt, and a giant limp spaghetti noodle in between.

I added to my frame rails just so I could scoot my crossmember toward the rear and use a longer tail shaft.

Damn, little too far away. I found a local 400 long tail for $200 "rebuilt" but not sure I trust that. Typically how much would a rebuilt on go for? Or to buy a $50 core to get rebuilt?

Unless you have driven the car or it comes from a person you truly know and trust I would treat any transmission as a core.

Does that include the "TH375" tailhousing?

Or is that a fifth? (I know it uses a different output shaft).
