455+st300?

I decided to build a nice roller 455 to wake up my old tired 2-barrel 350.
Now to my question, the car came with a 2 speed jetaway with switch pitch, the tranny worked fine without any problem when i drove the car last summer (only a little whining noise at N when it was warm)Will this tranny hold behind a 455 or should i change into a 350? I know many of u will now say that a th400 is better BUT that involves much more work and $$ to install due to the length of this trans that i want to avoid right now because almost all my $$ is going to the motor

All opinions are more than welcome

hi Panos,

With the engine your building the stock jetaway and a stock 350 will not hold up to any hard usage. I would suggest you save a little more money and go with the turbo 400. It will require cutting and shortening the drive line but will be worth it in the long run. If you alreadly have the turbo 350 use it for now just be gentle with it, no hard launches. Good luck and keep us posted

The factory DID use the ST300 behind the 400 motor in the 1965-66 442, but I agree with Pat. I'd find a cheap TH400 for now.

Ok i see your point, lets say i go with a th400 what kind of work/parts is needed to make the swap beside shortening the driveaxle? I looked at my tranny and the shifter (floor) is working with a linkage not a cable so i guess i have to change quite alot?

The 400 fits right in, just move the crossmember back (u just have to drill out the back set of holes) Driveshaft shortened, 400 slipyoke, and new ujoint for the slipyoke. Im not sure about the floorshifter. Mine was column, but hooked right up. Just wasnt able to manually shift into 1st and second.

On a side note. When i first swapped in the 455 i put in a th350, and every time i blew a th350 i would throw the jetaway back in until i found another 350 trans. i did this 3 different times, always blew the 350s, but never blew the jetaway. IMO the jetaway if tuff! I kept it to. its been just sitting for years now. I might use it someday for something.
