200r4 question

when i first bought this delta,it would feel like the motor was missing on the highway.

a neighbor who owned a GN took it for a drive, told me to unhook the connector to the trans, and it would go away

it did go away, but i still dont have the lockup into overdrive.

where does the connector to the trans go?

does it go to the ecm,or is it just 12 volts?

the tcc solenoid under the dash must still work, because i feel a difference when i touch the brake pedal going down the road.

it's just that the trans keeps going in and out of overdrive.

any advice is or tips is appreciated

The round LH connector goes to the ECM. It controls whether the TCC solenoid inside the tranny is to lock or unlock.
Another wire in it is a 3rd or 4th gear switch that tells the ECM that it is in those gears. Knowing this and other other factors (like having speed over 45), the TCC will engage.

If disconnecting the TCC make the problem go away, then the TCC solenoid is probably sticking - a very common problem with this tranny. The other common symptom it when it wont unlock at all, almost stalling the car when coming to a stop.

BTW, does your speedo needle fluctuate from a bad speedo cable? If so, this can confuse the ECM when driving close to 45.

the speedo needle doesnt wander ,but the needle does have a minor shake to it.

i looked up tcc solenoid on napa website, but it just shows the one under the dash not in the valve body.

There is no TCC solenoid under the dash. I never liked Napas website - I have gotten lots of wrong info from it...

I had not seen aftermarket TCCS's long ago so I had bought mine (AC Delco) from the local chevy dealer for about 65 bucks. It looks like rockauto now has aftermarket ones for 20 bucks - "control solenoid" under transmission.

This will be the time to replace tranny fluid and filter, too. Aside from dropping the pan, it is fairly straight forward. I had a good website link somewhere that gave good directions - I will see if I can find it.

Hi folks!

I've bought a 1985 Delta 88 Royale with the 307cui engine and TH2004R tranny a few months ago.

Everything worked perfect but now it won't shift into overdrive anymore or only very infrequent. It seems this problem started when it was getting warmer outside. In the winter, I could feel the tranny shifting noticeable but now it feels very smooth.

Could it be something with the fluid? I don't know how old it is and when it was replaced the last time.

Thank you!

regards, Andy

Age of the fluid does not really matter, as long as it is full, a clean red color, and does not smell strange (like burned.)
Also, this tranny should almost feel like it should have 5 gears. Three actual shifts and the TCC lockup. Pull the connector at the side of the trans and then drive and count the shifts.

How many miles on it? Has it been rebuilt before?
If many miles and never been rebuilt, it might be time to drop the pan, change the fluid, and look for metal shavings.

Maybe you burned up the 2 clutches in the OD gear.
If the trans has over 100K on it, just rebuild it with all new frictions & seals at the minimum.

Here's a pic of the piston with 3 clutches performance kit you can upgrade to with 3 frictions.
It's a shaved piston down .080" or there abouts to fit an extra friction disc in.

You can literally drop your transmission, pop off the pump, put these in, and reinstall it
without touching much else if you just want to fix the OD part.

If you buy this video, it will show you how to do it.
