1970 Cutlass

Hello I am new here. I am looking into a 1970 Cutlass with a 350-4bbl 4-speed. My question is how can i tell what transmission is in the car?

The wide ratio M20 was the only four speed offered in the Cutlass in the 1971 model year. Of course, if it isn't the original trans, there's no way to know for sure without taking the trans out and inspecting it.

Welcome aboard, is it just Cutlass or an "S", or a Supreme, etc ?

Its my understanding that for 1970, Supreme's could come either Muncie M20 or M21. Not sure about other versions.

DOH! Sorry, for some reason I read "1971" in the original question. For 1970, both the M20 and M21 were available. I am not aware of a foolproof way to tell them apart from the outside. Sorry I misread the original post the first time.

If its the original transmission it should have the vin derivative stamped into it, that will increase the value. Then there's another code stamp, I believe 4 or 5 characters long. The first digit will be a P and the last digit will be an A or B. The A would be for a M20, the B and M21. This assumes that nobody has been inside and changed things.

Let us know how it works out. If you do buy the car share pictures of it for us!
