The standard 4 speed was a Muncie M20, and I think that the early '70's used the 10 spline input, and later in the year went to 26 spline inputs. Both of these had 1" countershafts. Checkout www.5speeds.com for casting #'s,etc. I've got one of the early 70 Muncie's but can't get to it right now.

The transmissions use code letters, a '70 M21 should have "KA" on the right side of the case according to the Olds Wiki.
The Olds power team list in the Sullivan resto guide and the Olds Wiki show that the M20 wasn't an available option for the 442 in '70.
You either got the M40/Turbo 400 or M14 standard, the M-21 was optional as wmachine said.
You could get the M20 in all the '70 Cutlass models and F-85.

I did a swap on a 70 442 using 100% GM parts.
Two issues: Cost and your mechanical ability
Biggest potential problem: Is the crank drilled for the pilot bearing?
A lot of folks get around that by using a conversion bearing from one of the Olds suppliers. I tried that, and it failed after 500 miles.
If you get original parts and rebuild/refurbish them, you are looking at about $3,000.
And, about 30 hours of labor to swap out the parts.
BTW - BEST thing I did to the car. It is much more fun to drive.

In 1970 model year the 26 spline input/32 spline output Muncie was only availible in Chevelles with 454 motor, and only as and M-22...
1971-74 All Muncie's(M-20,M-21,M-22) used the 26/32 configuration...
Hope this helps... Crash

The correct M21 for a 1970 442 is KA. Most of the time, the tag is missing, but it should be bolted to one of the side cover bolts. It will say 1234762KA. You might also find KA stenciled on the case as well. The 70 442 M21 transmissions have the 10-spline input,& the smaller TH350 style output. I've had plenty of these. The main case will have casting number 3925661.The tailhousing will have casting number 3857584,with the speedo on the passenger side. The side cover will have casting number 3952648,with a switch port towards the front, pointing down.

The Cutlass could be had with an M14 3-spd,M20 4-spd,or M21 4-spd. I have the drivetrain from the rotted 70 Cutlass I parted last year, and it has the KA-coded M21,just like the 442.It also came with a 3:42 posi.
