I haven't changed the ball joints on a Toronado yet, but wondered why you needed numbers off the steering knuckle. When I logged onto RockAuto they have three brands of ball joints. They don't specify any difference related to the steering knuckle. Did a parts store tell you there's different ones used in 1970?

From what I understand the lower ball joint is the same but the upper it makes a difference, Rock Auto only shows lower ball joint. I use Napa because I work there.

OK, so the steering knuckle you need the number off of is the u-joint in the steering column? Or if I'm thinking wrong please describe for me the part you need the number off of.

I'm thinking about this some more. Is this the piece that the axle goes through? If your car is disc or drum maybe that's a difference that uses different part numbers.

There is a change in the taper of the ball joint from early to late.
From what I recall the exact date of the change is unknown, perhaps late 68.
My experience with this was trying to convert my project 66 to disk brakes and buying an entire disk setup with knuckles, rotors, calipers from what was supposed to be a 69. Turned out one of the knuckles had been swapped and I had two different ones.
One of the tapers is (or was) hard to find, I picked up a set from a nos supply house for around $100 each.
I will look around in my photos to try to find some part numbers
