Help- Photo Help Needed - 68 Toronado
Hi All,
I am finding it impossible to locate an original Delco horn/buzzer relay for my '68 Toronado. They are different from the Cutlass/442 relay that Napa sells.
My car was missing the relay, so I'm really starting from less than scratch on this problem. I have the '68 Shop manual, but it is not very clear, and not much help. I did determine that the relay should be mounted very close to the terminal junction on the right fender wheel house.
Can someone with a '68 Toronado post a photo of how this junction block should look with the correct relay in place? ('69 Toronado, and '68 Riviera may or may not be the same.)
I would also like to get the wiring colors running to each terminal on the relay.
If this relay cannot be located, I will probably attempt to make the Cutlass relay work in it's place, but I would need the wiring code.
Of course, if someone has the correct horn/buzzer relay & wiring I need, I'd be buying. I actually could use the junction block, too, as mine is broken. It looks like someone got mad at the door buzzer...
Thanks in advance,
Jerry

You're getting into a tizzy over nothing. The 1968 Toronado uses the exact same relay that all 1958-67 Oldsmobiles (and most Buicks and Pontiacs) used. The horn relay and junction block are serviced and replaced as one assembly.
1974 Olds factory parts manual indicates:
Grp 2.815, p/n 391924, junction block/horn relay- 1958-67 all, 1968 Toronado
You may not find a Delco-Remy (and you will pay dearly if you do because of the damn GTO cross-application
) but if you can find a good new old stock aftermarket piece such as a NAPA Echlin, Standard/Blue Streak, Filko or Sorenson you will be fine.
You'd be in more of a bind if you had a 1968 except Toronado. They use a one-year-only part that doesn't seem to cross to any other year or application, though it sounds like NAPA may have it.
Fig. 12E-7 on page 12E-5 of the 1968 CSM Toronado section has a good pic of the wiring connections at the junction block. 12E-1 wiring diagram shows all the wire colors. The two heavy black cables connect at the JB post, one from bat (+) to JB, the other from JB to starter solenoid. The 10 gage red wire with the fusible link section connects to the JB post also and feeds the car's main electrical harness (alternator/volt regulator, main lamp switch, ignition switch, and constant 12v to fuse block buss). The circuit breaker for power windows/seat if equipped connects to the JB post and the load side of that connects to the power accessory circuit and relay.
The horn wires show up as black in the 68 Toro wiring diagram but most I've seen are dark green. They have a flat two-wire plug similar to an internally regulated alternator's plug ( - - ). It plugs onto the appropriate terminals on the horn relay/junction block. The horn wires are the only ones that HAVE to be in a specific location. All of the wires that attach to the JB post can be in any order on the post and the car's electrical system will work- provided nobody's been in there buggering around.
Hope it's helped. Now see, it wasn't that difficult, was it?

Are you sure? '68 was the first year for the door buzzer, correct?
I went into this thinking this was going to be an easy fix. I've replaced horn relays many times on earlier GMs, Olds & Buicks.
This one is definately not a single unit with the junction block. It's the combination door buzzer/horn relay that makes this tougher, I think. I have not been able to find the correct piece over-the-counter, eBay, Fusick, etc...
I am using the '68 Olds Service Manual for reference.
My relay was missing, and the junction block was damaged before I got the car.
The Toronado supplement mentions the door buzzer.

Wikk, those relays look more like what's on my 69. They don't look anything like what's on my 64 Starfires, which according to factory parts book is what the 68 Toro uses.
I don't have access to a 68 to see for myself and the one guy on here who could look at his 68s for you is MIA right now- he hasn't been here in several weeks.

Those pictured above are correct for a Cutlass. I had one in my hand at an Oldsmobile show for comparison. The Cutlass relay is not correct, and neither is the earlier 4 terminal type, because it doesn't have a door buzzer.
I'm going to look at some Toro parts cars this weekend.
I'll update this, if I have any luck.

Have you seen the NOS one on evilbay?

Did you try USA Parts Supply?
They carry a lot of hard to find parts, have a really nice site now too.
