demand for low mileage early Toro 455 ?

I hang out on a lot of forums and I know how uncool it is when someone joins a forum just so they can sell something.

So i am not exactly doing that.

I have a 1972 Revcon motorhome with only 28K miles. It is FWD with a Toro 455 and TH 425 trans in pretty good condition.

I'm having limited success getting rid of the camper or parting it out and I am curious about the demand for a low mileage original Tornado drive train.

These were not modified by the RV company. They bought Toro frame halves and built the RV around them. THey might have used a lower final drive but that's about it.

So, is this a rare find? Should i try to sell it whole are are there parts that might be of value?

I hope this post doens't rub anybody the wrong way.

Thanks

Dave Silva

Do you have any pics of the motorhome? Or a link to some pictures? I don't see why it should rub anyone wrong, if you can't sell the whole thing I am sure there are people on here that would be interested, if not help find someone who is.

I am in Eastern North Carolina, 50 miles south of Norfolk, VA.

No idea about a price. I'm trying to recover $1500 or so from the motorhome with as little work as possible.

If the engine is much coveted then that might be the best way to get money out of the coach.

the engine is here:

It looks a lot better now, i replaced the head gasket and all the top end gaskets and painted everything.

the motorhome is here:

thanks

Nice retro machine

The intake is 1970+ with that choke and 2 TVS ports.
What letter is on the corner of the heads? It might not be a 66-67 425.

No worries jumping in just to find a home for that.
There are a number of FWD Motor Home enthusiasts.
If you can verify the final drive ratio that might help sell at least that part.

Yes, the electrical connector lying there broke off the TCS TVS seen in the photo. It's a Trans Controlled Spark feature, probably better off to bypass it.
Yes your carb is missing the choke pulloff link, so that and the secondary gradual tip-in are not functional. Easy fix.

Points ignition evidently.

Man, that looks like a really decent motorhome for $1,500. For just a few bucks, I bet you could have her on the road again and living the RV life.

That motor is definitely worth something, but, as a low-compression 455, now even lower as the head gaskets have been replaced with thicker ones, which would need the pistons replaced to get the compression up, it's value isn't going to be super high - I'm thinking $500 if someone can see it run, but someone else can correct me if they think I'm low.

Thanks, what about the trans? Hard getting accurate info on the final drive but we assume they were ordered with highest ratio available. The coach weighs 7800 LB empty with a 10,000 LB gross.

Unfortunately, I have no idea.

The TH400 is an exceptionally strong transmission, so good used units are not very expensive.

Yours is low mileage, but is also from a mobile home, which means hard miles.

Yours is a Toro front drive unit, which is certainly lower production than a regular 400, but as far as I know, the Toro drives don't break, so that's not likely a big deal.

Your best customer is probably the wiseguy who wants to put a big block into a Civic or a VW.

It is a good thing I am not close or I would probably be buying a motorhome I don't need. It would be a shame to part that thing out. I think $1,500 is a bargain. That thing need to be on the road again.

You said it, Wiile!

Al I can say, is that if I drove that thing home, I'd be sleeping in it for the next year, along with all my clothes.
I'd be lucky if my wife let me inside to use the bathroom.

Still, I'd love to have one.
