69 toro 455 engine specs

So i came across a 69 toro on c-list the other day and when i found out it still had the factory 455 (running btw) and only had 64000 miles, I picked it up. I'm a little more familiar with the 66-67 425 engines.Of course i read it has 375 advertised hp. Wonder how close that is to reality? I'm wondering if these engines have the hard to find .921 lifters like the earlier toro engines. Since i'm really only interested in the engine, is there any market for the rest of the car? Any help on the info will be appreciated.

Rust kills those cars readily. Limited following.
No, none of the engines after 1967 used the .921 lifters
HP ratings were all sales games done w/o any accessories &c.
Notice how conveeeeeeniently they always had at least 10 lbs of car per HP also

So you're telling me the 375 hp is bunk? I'm sure its not over, so how much would you estimate it really has?

It probably has about 375 SAE Gross horsepower, maybe 390, maybe 350, whatever.

In terms of SAE Net horsepower, it's probably about 300, maybe 275.

I assume that by gross you mean at the flywheel and net being at the rear wheel?

On another note, i was hoping somebody might be looking some parts for this car. It seems to be well optioned. Tilt/telescopic steering, power windows, and am/fm 8track. Oh well, maybe somebody will have a need when i put the rest back on Clist.

Does the AM/FM Radio work? What condition is the steering wheel? If your planning on parting it out I might want a few things for my 68. Defiantly post some pictures.

Nope. That's rear wheel HP (or, in a Toro, front wheel HP).

Gross and Net HP are SAE standards for measurement of crankshaft HP.

Gross was used through 1970, and a bit into '71.
Net has been used since '71-'72.

Gross involves, as mentioned, a completely stripped-down motor - no water pump, alternator, P/S pump, and set up with exhaust plumbing that is essentially headers.

Net requires that the engine be set-up as it will be in the car, including exhaust system.

This is one of the reasons why HP specifications dropped so quickly between the 1970 and '71 model years (reduced compression is the other reason).

If you are comparing this motor to a Toyota minivan motor that's spec'd at 300 HP, the minivan is making more.
