Question 1st Gen Toro - Bouncing Speedometer

I have a bouncing speedometer on a '68 Toro that I just purchased.
I read that this was a problem on these when they were new.
Has anyone found a solution?
It's fine, up to about 50 miles per hour, then speedo reading starts fluctuating wildly between 115 and 30 miles per hour.
I'm hoping it's just a matter of greasing the speedo cable, but before I start digging into the dash, I though I'd ask...
Also, It is not noisey, like a cable that needs lube.

Try greasing it, but I suspect you'll need a new cable.

Question

I would try lubing the speedo cable first.

Thanks. Another reason to tear into the dash, along with fixing the clock & Delco stereo, and maybe redoing the crinkle coat...
