Question 1970 toronado std or deluxe GT

I have a 1970 toronado GT. The vin. shows the car as a 39487 but the body plate shows the car as a 39687 series. the cars engine was gone when i recieved the car but i have checked the code and vin on the tranmission and it matches the vin on the car. also the body plate paint code matches the azure blue of the paint in the trunk and under the paint different place on the car.( car was repainted to a different than the original color) so I dont think the body plate has been changed. so do I have a std GT or deluxe GT. My parts car has the 39487 on both the vin and body plate, but I have heard that sometimes oldsmobile vin and body plates didnt always match.

That sounds like a great find either way!

The '70 Toronado with or without being GT is my favorite version.

You need to get in touch with the guys and gals at the Toronado Owners Assication. For the past 7 years Bill Payne , president of the TOA, has been tring to docment every 1966-70 Toronado , espeically W-34s.
Dues are only $30/year. For the love of GOd, sign on with this group.

I have been a member of the TOA for about 2 years. they have been really helpful in the documentation on my 70 GT. and yes it does have the rear notched bumper

First let's clarify that the original post is about whether it is a model 9487 Toronado or a 9687 Toronado Custom. *Not* whether or not it was a GT, which was option W-34 available on either model. 23,082 1970 Toronados were the Custom and 2,351 were standard.
Yes, there is something that happened with the model numbers in 1970, but I can't find the info on it yet.
I had a mostly original W-34 a few years ago. Original paint, etc. Was a truly impressive car to have. Unfortunately, after I sold it, well, take a look for yourself:

My experience is that most Toro have a 9487 VIN, and the body plate is where you find 9487 or 9687 designation. My 69 is that way.

I was told that some years will have a 9487 body plate even though car will have Y69 deluxe interior. The three of those I've seen all had wind-up windows instead of electric.
