Post 1969 Toronado power steering gear seal replacement

Hi all,
I'd need your support for my 69' Toronado and would be very happy for any hint.
Since my power steering gear was leaky I ordered a seal set to repair it.

The manual says that the lock nut and the four side cover bolts have to be removed.

Having the nut and bolts removed I wasn't able to remove or even lift the side cover at all.
After several tries with different tools I managed to rotate the whole side cover on the pitman shaft to remove it.

I put in the new seal and did everything backwards.

But after only a few hours of driving i had a leaky steering gear again.
Probably the seal was damaged while mounting the sidecover. :/

Got again a seal set now and again it's hard to remove the side cover at all.
Since I do not want to damage the (2nd) new seal again (in case I get the side cover removed ) I would be very happy if you could give me some advice on the disassembly / assembly.
(Just for information, the whole power steering gear is still assembled in the car.)

Best regards
