1968 Toronado Base vs Custom

Does anybody know the difference between the base model (9487) and the custom model (9687) ?

There were very few base models produced. The difference is the base (9487) has non bucket style seats and has flat door panels. The custom mode (9687) has bucket style seats or bucket back bench style seats with more luxurious style door panels.

Neither the '68 chassis service manual nor the '68 dealer specs book actually show a 9687 series. Both only show a single Toronado series, 9487, and the Toronado page from the specs book shows the "Custom" as option Y69. That option included the bucket seats, sidewall trim panels, etc.

This is why the printing date of the literature is important. That 1968 SPECS booklet that is available on line is a Jan 1968 printing, and even then, note the changes from the original printing in Sept 1967:
