1966 Toronado Drive axles.
1966 Toronado Drive axles.
Are the 66 axles available, rebuilt, from a reliable source, I have been told that the 66 are unique in length and design, so you cannot use a 67 on 66? I do not have the time to experiment with so called fits all years versions. Any personal experience or sources that work? Bob.
66 and early 67 axles used a round axle joint which was changed to a triangular joint during 1967 production. I expect you'll find the 67-78 axle to be more readily available.
The 74 parts book lists the later type axle for all 66-74 cars and notes that the package includes an adapter for 1966-early 67 cars. Not sure what you'd do about that. Can you get your axles rebuilt?
When I replaced them on my 69 in the mid-90s, I found that most rebuilders were eliminating the rubber torsional damper from the RH axle. I have noticed no difference in the car without it.

Toronado Axles.
Thanks for the reply, sounds like my only option is to rebuild the original axles as the outer seals have split, sounds like the adapter's must be the "shim" to allow shorter axles to be installed? Anyone else can chime in about the adapter situation. Bob.
