Leaking/Overflowing Gas Tank 69 442

So I just had a scary experience and wanted to see if anyone has encountered this.
I had my car parked in my inclined driveway facing down and was topping off my tank with a 5 gallon can—fuel gage is inaccurate but that’s another story.
suddenly there is fuel pouring down at the front passenger side of the tank onto the hot exhaust and the ground.
I quickly rolled the car down to the level street and the leak stopped.
There’s been no issue with lack of fuel supply to the engine.
I figure this must either be a) an actual hole in the top of the tank, or b) when my mechanic was diagnosing the fuel gage he reinstalled the float mechanism without a gasket or otherwise improperly.
any other ideas? Obviously I’m going to have to drain and drop the tank to be sure, but do any of you have experience with this?

Thank you!

I can look it up in various locations but I believe there is an external vent located on the passenger side of the fuel tank? Others can validate. Don't get overly concerned just quite, yet.

I am not 100% about this. I am only providing a diagram of the location of the external fuel vent and fuel vent surge incorporated (I believe) into the external fuel vent. I suggest you wait for others to validate but in the meantime you might evaluate whether the fuel is leaking from the fuel vent surge. I would suggest a completely filled fuel tank sitting on a serious incline might overflow.

If for some reason you need to replace the fuel surge vent, Fusick offers a kit complete with filter, hoses and clamps, part number GTF690K. I suspect that's where your overflow came from. I replaced mine with the Fusick part when I had the gas tank out just for insurance although there was no indication the original vent was bad. Yours could very possibly still be good and the overflow was simply caused by the incline.

If that’s the first time it’s done that, I’d
be willing to bet it’s coming out of the vent.

Since you were filling the car with a 5 gallon can, you probably overfilled it to the point where fuel can come out the vent.

Look things over, if you don’t see anything obvious drive the car. Next time you fill it, don’t overfill it, see it it leaks. Only then would I attempt a repair.
