Index mark - choke cover

The mark (index?) located near the "DIV" on my choke cover, how is that exact location established? Meaning, was that the specific location of the mark on all 1968 covers (7031484)? Added note: the parts manual shows this # covers '66 to '68.

Or was it based on GM testing each cover/coil and making the mark (which would seem odd with mass production)?

The index mark has always been the starting point, it could turn out to be either left or right of there depending on the coil inside.

Index mark is on the top edge, the cover you show has half of the spot where you put screwdriver in is broke off. Setting was set on carb cold before factory installed them, so that choke just closed and locked down.

Each coil is slightly different in response. I suspect there might have been a calibration step when the coils were assembled and thus the scribe mark on each (as opposed to a line cast into the cover at the same time as the lettering). The CSM lists the proper alignment for the choke. Most are set at zero, but some are supposed to be plus one or minus one mark.
