Thump

Hey Gents,

I'm hear a loud thumping sound, when I lock out the drivers' side wheel completing a left hand turn or attempting a u-turn. At first I thought I had a backspace issue with my rims, but when I checkrd the passenger side wheel, my tire did not rub the wheel well, I found the driver side does rub, when I completely lock out to the left.

I took a rubber mallet and banged the drivers' side wheel well, and got it to clear the wheel without damaging the wheel well.

Could I have another issue going on with my front end. BTW I have never had the front end rebuilt. . When I drive straight ahead or turn right I hear nothing. Any other ideas on this thumping noise??

Is it a continuous pulsing thumping sound? How much clearance do you have (in inches)?
If very small, the flex in the bushings could still cause rubbing. Original 1972 bushings are pretty compliant, and if like mine, partially missing!
You might rub some chalk in the area closest to the wheel in the well and try again to see if any was rubbed off. If so, then a front suspension rebuild can be seen in the future.
Are the tires clearing the sway bar?

Lugs tight? Jack up the front end and check wheel play for a bad or loose bearing.....Might need a tierod end or worse........It sure isnt supposed to make noise when you hit the stop on a hard turn....Jerr

Make sure the coils are seated properly

Yes it is a pulsing thumping sound. I marked the wheel well with chalk, and it does slightly rub off when drivers' side is locked out. It appears I have a 3/4 inch clearence on drivers side, and about 1.25 onch on passenger side when wheel is locked out.

Jerr.... I jacked up the car, and checked for free play but both feel pretty tight. I did notice no matter what I do when I attempt staighten the wheels, the drivers side wheel is slightly offline.

I did have front disc brakes put on over the winter, and I don't think I had this problem before the swap. Maybe the coils didn't seat properly like Jamesbro suggested. I'll have to take her to my shop guy. Since a front end rebuild is most likely due, what suggestions for the rebuild kit/ I hear Moog is better for these types of cars, any input on this??

Thanks
Kino

Moog is recommended for all of your front end replacement parts. Rockauto is a good supplier for these.
While there may be cheaper no-name parts available, the lifespan and fit quality of them is questionable. A front end job is one you only want to do once - and right.
