My car had a floor shift automatic and I have installed a five speed manual with hydraulic clutch. Do I just cut off the bracket on the end of the steering column? Not sure what I should do Hopefully I don’t need to buy a new steering column.
I believe that lever is to connect the back-drive rod from the transmission shifter to lock your ignition key when in park (AT) or reverse (MT). Looks like your neutral lock-out and reverse switch is also on your column. If you no longer desire that functionality, you'll still need to hold it in a position that unlocks the key cylinder on the column. Cutting it off could hinder your ability to do that. Why not just leave it on?
That back drive linkage operates the neutral safey/backup light switch in addition to correctly clocking the column internals so you can get the key to the LOCK position. ASSUMING the five speed has a build in backup light switch, and you are either adding the clutch safety switch or doing without, you should push that lever all the way to the PARK position (fully clockwise as viewed from the steering box end of the column) and drill a small hole between the outer cover and the shift tube. Install a short sheet metal screw to lock the column in position. Now you can cut off that tab.
