shocking discovery

The boy and I noticed my 70 CS was hitting the lifted up or buckled pavement hard enough that the rear was jumping out. Well just purchased some NAPA spectrum (Tenneco/Monroe) and USA made to boot, shocks.

Upon removal and compared old to new. Back left slow rebound, back right toast no signs of leakage. Front right slow rebound and front left was Ok.

The old units were Gabriel/Sears entry level units. Put on summer of 1997 with only 18,000 miles on them.

So low miles mean little.

Rubber seals deteriorate with time sometimes worse than with use.

That's almost 20 years, which is a long time. Tires aren't good after that long even though they still have decent tread.

X2 on that. treads no good if there is dry rot. Enjoy it while fresh. Apparently shocks (these days) don't last long either.

The only thing shocking is that you think they should perform like they were new....20 years later

That wasn't the point! The point was for people that have not thought about how well their cars shocks/suspensions were performing to go out and check.
